The Price is Right is my all-time favourite game show and always has been. It's easy to see why pretty much everybody likes this show. It offers a wider variety of prizes than pretty much any other game show that I know of and it has lots of games within the show itself.
Probably the most important thing that makes this game show a show is the pricing games. This is where the vast majority of the prizes are offered. There are those pricing games that people really like to watch the contestants play as well as play the games themselves. Because of this, I've decided to make a Top 10 list of my all-time favourite pricing games.
So, without further to do, here are my Top 10 Favourite Pricing Games of All-Time (clicking on the names of the pricing games will take you to web pages that tell you about the games in great detail as well as pictures):
#10 - Ten ChancesIt's a coincidence that I put this game at #10. Anyways, this game is a pretty good game. You can win up to three prizes which includes a two digit priced prize, a three digit priced prize, and a car. What I like about this game is that once you've correctly guessed the price of one of the prizes, you get to keep that prize no matter what happens during the rest of the game. If you've seen this game, you might know that the prices of all the prizes nowadays end in zero, which makes it a little easier. Overall, this game is fun to play and the difficulty level isn't too high.
#9 - Punch-A-BunchWith this game, it's very hard to find the top prize of $25,000 out of 50 different holes since only one of those holes actually has it. If you didn't get that hole, you would always walk out with a money amount of some kind. The only exception is if you guessed incorrectly on all four prizes, which is how you earned the number of holes you got to punch. In that case, you wouldn't get to punch a hole at all and walk away with nothing. As long as you guess correctly on at least one of the prizes, you are guaranteed to win some money, whether it's $50, $100, $250, $500, $1000, $5000, $10,000, or $25,000. Another thing I really like about this game is that 4 of the holes contain Second Chances, so it'd technically be possible to win more than $25,000 if you get one of the Second Chance slips and the $25,000 slip. Overall, this game is really fun to play and pretty much guarantees you to win money of some amount.
#8 - Pass The BuckThis game is pretty good. You get to choose from 6 different numbers. 3 of them contain money amounts ranging from $1000 to $5000. One of the 6 numbers contains a car and the other two numbers contain "LOSE EVERYTHING" which you definitely want to avoid. One thing that makes this game great is that you're guaranteed at least one number to pick from. You can earn up to two more choices by knowing the prices of some products. The nice thing is that you don't have to use up all your choices, which means if you uncover something that you don't want to risk losing, you can stop and take whatever you've won up that point. It could be two or three different money amounts or it could be the car and one or two money amounts or just one of the prizes.
Just like
Punch-A-Bunch, this game is pretty much about luck since nobody knows which numbers the prizes are hidden behind. Overall, this game is pretty fun to play, unless you end up winning nothing.
#7 - Master KeyThis game offers a few different prizes as well: A three digit priced prize, four digit priced prize, and a car. The concept of the game is pretty simple: Guess the correct prices of two small prizes and you'll earn one of the five keys for each of the two prizes you guess correctly. There's one key to unlock each prize (one key for one prize, another key for another prize, etc.). There's also the Master Key, which unlocks all three prizes, and then there's the key that doesn't unlock any of the prizes. Just like the two prvious games listed above, this game is about luck. You can't tell which key is which, so that further proves that that's what this game is about. If you end up getting two of the five keys, you're guaranteed to win at least one of the prizes, which is nice. If you only get one key, you have a 20% chance of not winning anything, and if you don't get any keys, the game is over and you don't win a thing. This game is definitely fun to play and doesn't require a whole lot of brain power. You just have to know about the two small items and get lucky with the key(s) you pick.
#6 - PathfinderWhat I really like about this game is the setup and the sound effects, even though the one sound is taken directly from the game show
Trivia Trap. I also like the concept of this game: you stand in the middle of a 5x5 square grid and work your way along a path that completes the price of a car. You're given the first number in the price, which is the center square, and then the next number is adjacent to the one that you're standing on (the numbers don't go diagonally, which makes it a little easier). If you get the next number correct, you try to guess the next correct adjacent number, and so on. Anytime you make a mistake, you can earn a second chance by guessing the correct price of one of three prizes. If you guess correctly, you get to try to find the next adjacent number. If not, then you have to pick one of the remaining two prizes and guess it correctly. If you end up guessing the prices of all three prizes incorrectly or make too many mistakes with the numbers in the price of the car, then the game is over and you don't win anything. Overall, a very fine pricing game.
#5 - Three StrikesI really like this game since it always offers really nice cars. Usually, the cars are worth more than $30,000, which isn't too common on the show. The concept of the game is pretty easy: you try to draw a chip that shows a digit on it out of a bag that looks like a baseball, and then try to guess which spot in the price of the car it belongs. If you get it right, the chip is discarded. If you get it wrong, then it goes back in the bag. Among the 5 digit chips, there's also a chip that has a strike on it. If you draw it, you get a strike against you and it goes back in the bag. Draw it three times before filling in the price of the car and you lose. I really like the game design as well. It's very appealing to look at and the game itself is a really good one.
#4 - PlinkoThis game is probably the most well-known pricing game on the show. I think it's because of the design of the Plinko board and athat you can win up to $50,000. It was originally $25,000, but has changed since then. Most people find this game to be their favourite, but not me. I really do like this game, but there are a few games that I like better. What makes this great is when the contestant drops each chip. You never know what slot the chip is gonna land in and that leaves you in suspense for a little bit. The only thing that sucks about this game is that there are two $0 slots that the Plinko chips can possibly land in. Other than that, this game is a really fun game to watch or play.
#3 - TemptationI find this pricing game to be a lot like
Deal or No Deal. Once you've picked the digits that hopefully make up the price of the car, you have to decide if you want to keep the prizes you used to make up the car's price or go for the car and hopefully, have all 4 digits right (the first one is given to you). If even one digit is wrong, you win nothing. That's what makes this game great though. If I ever played this game on the show, I'd take the prizes. Chances are that you've got at least one digit wrong unless you're a hardcore car expert or just lucky. If you take the prizes, then you get to see what would've happened if you went for the car. It really sucks if you ended up having all 4 digits right, but you don't know for sure what's gonna happen if you take the prizes or go for the car. Those are the reasons why I like this game. It definitely like
Deal or No Deal: you don't know for sure what's gonna happen and if you should take the deal or keep going.
#2 - Spelling BeeI really like the concept of
this game: You try to spell "CAR" using cards that contain letters on them or say "CAR" on them. This game is more about luck than strategy. It's also another game where you could walk away with $2000-$5000 cash (each card is worth $1000 and you're given two cards from the start). That makes it a little harder to decide whether or not you should go for the car. In this game, most people do since getting a C and an A are pretty easy and if they've got an R as one of their first two or three cards, the odds of winning are fairly good. I like how the design of this game is supposed to look like a bunch of honeycomb cells, which is pretty funny and works with the game. Overall, it is one of the most fun games to play on the show and is definitely one of my absolute favourites.
#1 - Golden RoadThis game is probably the most epic game in the history of pricing games. It has a few prizes to offer, each one getting progressively better. The biggest prize is always a really expensive one, always worth more than $40,000 nowadays. The prizes range from Corvettes and Vipers to motorhomes and really fancy boats. No other pricing game offers prizes like that, even though Three Strikes offers really nice cars, but not as expensive as Golden Road can get. The game generates more excitement than pretty much any other pricing game as far as I know. That's how good this game is. The first prize is always three digits in price, and then the second prize is 4 digits in price. To be able to win the car, you've got to work your way there. It's a lot similar to Ten Chances where you start off with the least expensive prize and work you're way up to the car. But in this game, if you make one mistake, the game is over. However, you get to keep any prizes you've won up to that point which is very nice, especially after discovering what you could win at the end of the Golden Road. To sum up, this game has it all and is the reason why it is my favourite pricing game of all time.
